World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that was released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. Development of the game took roughly 4–5 years, and it’s still one of the most popular video games in that genre even after 14 years.

Since its launch, the game has been constantly updated with new features and expansions, such as: The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion and Battle for Azeroth. There are also a lot of online tournaments and the biggest World of Warcraft tournament is The Arena World Championship, which is hosted annually at BlizzCon. Last years’ prize pool was an astonishing $280,000 USD. Many betting sites offered to bet on this esports tournament online, with live betting and even free esport bets.

World of Warcraft is the successor of the popular Warcraft franchise that started as a real-time strategy (RTS) in 1994. At BlizzCon 2017, Blizzard announced a “classic” version of the game that will be released in the summer of 2019, and the game would be included with a standard subscription for existing players.

The majority of the game takes place on Azeroth, which is a world consisting of four major continents: Kalimdor, the Eastern Kingdoms, Northrend and Pandaria. There are also the realms of Outland and Draenor to explore. The main focus of the game is an ongoing war between two major factions, the Horde and the Alliance.

The Horde is a faction that was founded by orc immigrants from Draenor, which is the homeworld of this race and is believed to have been destroyed when the orcs opened portals to find new worlds to conquer. In the Horde, other races include orcs, trolls, taurens, undead forsaken, blood elves, goblins and pandarens. Every race has special abilities and passive powers. The capital of the Horde is Orgrimmar and their leader is a warchief named Sylvanas Windrunner. Other important cities that are under the Horde’s control are Thunder Bluff (the capital of the tauren race) and Silvermoon City (the capital of the blood elves).

The Alliance, formerly known as the Alliance of Lordaeron, was formed after the humans’ defeat in the First War and currently consists of humans, dwarves, gnomes, night elves, draenei, worgens and pandarens. Their homeworld is Azeroth. The capital of the Alliance is Stormwind City and their leader is King Anduin Wrynn. Their other important cities are Ironforge (the capital of the dwarves) and The Exodar (the capital of the dranei).

Overview of the game

As mentioned before, World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, which means that you can interact with a very large number of players within a virtual world. And the best part is that the whole world continues to exist and evolve even when you are away from the game. As a player, you can take control of a character and customize it as you like. For example, you can choose faction, race, class, roles, and professions. There are a huge variety of classes at your disposal, such as warrior, paladin, hunter, rogue, priest, death knight, shaman, mage, warlock, monk, druid, and demon hunter, all with unique abilities and in-game playing styles.

Keep in mind that all of them have different roles. When engaging in PvP (player versus player) and PvE (player versus environment) each character has a certain role to fulfil. He can either be a tank, a healer or a damage dealer. A tank is a character whose purpose is to absorb damage and prevent others from being attacked. His main position should be between the enemies and other party members. A healer is a character whose purpose is to heal and protect their allies. They have to anticipate incoming damage and be ready to make split-second decisions. Damage dealers are responsible for dealing damage in the group. That is their whole job, but a good damage dealer must learn not only how to deal damage, but how to avoid receiving it.

There are also professions. Professions are skills that you learn and advance in order to trade and make in-game gold. There are plenty of professions, which are divided into 2 classes:

The first class:

  • Herbalism– harvesting herbs
  • Mining– mining ores, minerals and gems, also includes smelting and smelting ore into bars of metal
  • Skinning– skinning the corpses of certain creatures for their hide, leather and scales
  • Alchemy– creating potions, elixirs, flasks and oils
  • Blacksmithing– smith weapons, mail and plate armor, and buffing weapons
  • Enchanting– adding magical properties and enhancements to items, creating wands
  • Engineering– engineer a wide range of mechanical devices such as guns, trinkets, mechanical pets and mounts
  • Inscription– inscribe glyphs that modify existing spells and abilities, creating scrolls and staves
  • Jewelcrafting– creating powerful gems that can be socketed into armor and weapons
  • Leatherworking– creating leather armor and some capes
  • Tailoring– creating cloth armor and cloth bandages

The second class:

  • Archaeology– digging valuable artifacts
  • Cooking– cooking food that can restore health and mana and provide temporary buffs
  • Fishing–  fish from lakes, rivers and oceans

There are two main ways to play the game – player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP).

PvE means that you are interacting with computer-controlled allies or enemies. This mode contains a storyline, dungeons and raids, and is mostly played cooperatively with other members of your faction. Dungeons are designed for a party of 5 players. Mostly one of them is a tank, one is a healer, and three are damage dealers. Raids consist of a group of more than 5 players, and can be up to 40 people.

In PvP players compete against each other. In World of Warcraft you will mostly fight against players from the opposite faction. PvP requires a lot of skill and knowledge if you wish to beat other players. There are 5 main types of PvP in World of Warcraft:

  • Arena – death match style PvP which can be played 2v2 or 3v3. There are no special objectives in this type of PvP.
  • Battlegrounds – 10v10 or 40vs40 battles in which each team has objectives to complete while fighting each other.
  • PvP zones – essentially normal areas of the game world, with the addition of specific battleground-like objectives, vehicles and rewards.
  • World PvP – this may refer to organised or spontaneous activities across the whole of Azeroth
  • Duels – 1v1 fights that are perfect for warming up or challenging friends

How to play

World of Warcraft is available on PC and can be downloaded via Blizzard’s launcher, Battle.net.

Battle.net is a gaming platform that contains all of Blizzard’s games, such as: World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, StarCraft 2, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch, StarCraft and Warcraft 3. There are also two games from Activision: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Destiny 2.

After you download Battle.net you can obtain a free trial of World of Warcraft. This means that you can play until your character reaches level 20 (there are 120 levels) and see if you like the game. If you do, you can buy it on Battle.net for 50 euros. Be careful! This game is subscription based, which means that you have to pay a monthly fee of 13 euros in order to play or you can use in-game gold that you earn throughout the game and buy tokens that can be used as a monthly subscription.

Esports betting explained

Esports betting is a lot like betting on traditional sports. There are very popular teams that receive lots of bets and smaller teams that are trying to get attention and become famous, just like in any other sport. But the fun part is that in esports lesser teams can beat popular ones because there are so many talented players who did not turn to professional teams while they were young. This means they can easily play on a professional level and beat even the best players in the world.

Before you bet any real money on esports online, you should try and see how it works first. There are many betting sites with welcome offers, betting bonuses and free esport bets.
With that being said, let’s assume you want to make a bet. You can bet on tournament winners, certain matches and there are even live betting options on some sites, with odds updated after every round. There are single bets, doubles and multiple bets. It is best to start with single bets and bet only on one event at a time, as this way you can earn some money with minimal risk. But of course, the greater the risk, the greater the reward.

Betting options available

World of Warcraft has two betting options:

  • Arena battle winner – This is in PvP mode, where two teams are fighting against each other. This is a pretty straightforward option as you simply bet on a team that will win in an arena match that is mostly 2v2 or 3v3.
  • Special PvE – Betting on which team you think will complete a difficult quest, dungeon or raid. For example, when it went live, Bet365 was offering bets on which guild would be the first to defeat the mythic Kil’Jaeden. Sadly, this betting option is not regularly on offer. It is mostly available whenever new content is available.

There is also live betting, known as bet in-play. You can bet throughout the match, but you have to be really quick because games can be intense and short.
